The aim of SBRd Digitalization is using the Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology in post commissioning stage and during operation of an industrial plant which can have great benefits for plant owners and operators. Some of these benefits are:
• Instant access to master engineering data (documents and drawings) of a plant
• 3D visualization of complex multi systems of plant on mobile device and where is needed by managers and maintenance teams.

Many of existing operating industrial plants which are designed and built before introducing IT revolution in construction industry, have no any sort of digitalized engineering data at all and even many plants that have been constructed within past 15 years have just scattered engineering data based on different software platforms like Autodesk AutoCAD, TEKLA, PDMS, Inventor, MS Office, without combining these data together to one general platform. Advancement in multi discipline software platforms in recent years made it possible to produce a unique model of all disciplines of an industrial plant and even attach the operation data to this model for better management of physical asset. SBRd with both specialists in design of plant and specialists in the field of information technology try to implement new BIM technologies for existing operating industrial plants in order to increase productivity. 3D Modeling Steps summary

For producing a combined multidiscipline 3D model of an industrial plant, following steps should be taken: 1- Choosing the appropriate software for project according to nature of project, e.g. for process plants, the AVEVA E3D software is more appropriate, although for building dominant plants the Revit software is recommended. Gathering existing engineering data, including 3D software model, 2D software model, MS Office Docs, printed documents, etc. 2- Exporting existing 3D models of structures and equipment to the selected software based on standard interoperability protocols. 3- Modeling the objects with 2D software model or printed data including electrical, fluids, mechanics, machinery, civil etc. 4- Making 3D laser scan of structures or equipment where no data are available, if necessary, and importing them in the model and edit them. 5- Appending the deliverable engineering data (as built drawings and documents) to model by relevant available software tools. 6- SBRd team will use the system and to upload new data to the model and update model according changed happened in site. Also in future following step is possible: 7- Gathering operation and maintenance data from owner and operator data bases and append it to the model. 8- In advanced stage, there is possibility to link the instrument live data to model for simulating the process and make advice for better productivity and safety of the plant.

In complex industrial plants defining how organization can access and retrieve the master engineering and maintenance information always is a challenge. Currently in best cases the owner/operator stores all digital information (AutoCAD's, 3D models, Office documents, PDFs, …) and images of non-digital info (plotted drawings, printed reports, …) into a computer with a search system and gives access to specified employees like managers and engineering or maintenance staff. Research shows that in owner/operator firms at least 20% of man-hour is spent just looking for information. In some industries lack of correct information at the right time can cause serious safety issues. In other industries lack of information at least can cause profit loss due to unwanted production shut downs.
